Challenge: Design a disposable, single-use vein harvesting retractor with integrated illumination to enhance visibility during bypass procedures, featuring a sealed power source that prevents reuse and ensures limited-duration functionality, while validating safety and efficacy through testing.
 
Solution: Vertex engineered the DVR with a built-in illumination system and a sealed power source, active only for the procedure’s duration to enforce single-use functionality. Comprehensive testing was conducted on animal models and human subjects to ensure clinical effectiveness and safety.
 
Outcome: The DVR improved surgical precision and patient outcomes in vein harvesting procedures, delivering reliable illumination and enforcing disposability, streamlining bypass surgeries and enhancing recovery through innovative, safe, and effective medical device design.
